Your home environment plays a major role in how smoothly your recovery unfolds after hip or knee replacement. A few simple adjustments can make everything safer, easier and more comfortable during the first few weeks.

Start by preparing a safe walking space. Remove loose rugs, tidy wires and ensure your main pathways are clear. Keeping your floors clutter-free reduces the risk of tripping when you're using mobility aids.

Creating a comfortable resting area is also important. Many patients benefit from a firm, high-seated chair that is easy to get in and out of. Having pillows nearby to support your leg, and a table for medication and water, keeps everything accessible.

In the kitchen, reorganise frequently used items to waist height to avoid uncomfortable bending. Preparing meals in advance or having ready-to-heat options available can reduce strain in the early days.

For the bathroom, consider placing a non-slip mat in the shower, installing a grab rail, or using a raised toilet seat if advised. Little changes make a big impact during the initial recovery period.

Preparing your home in advance turns those first weeks into a safer, calmer and more manageable experience — allowing you to focus on healing.
