A successful surgical journey starts well before the day of the operation. Preparing properly not only improves outcomes but also makes recovery smoother and more predictable.

Physical preparation, often called prehabilitation, plays a major role. Strengthening the muscles around the affected joint improves post-operative function, while aerobic exercise boosts circulation and general fitness. Even small improvements beforehand can make a big difference afterward.

Medication management is also important. Your surgical team will advise which medications to continue, adjust or pause. This may include blood thinners, diabetes medications, or anti-inflammatory tablets.

Lifestyle choices support healing as well. Eating a balanced diet, staying hydrated, managing weight and stopping smoking (if applicable) all help reduce complications and speed up recovery.

Home preparation is often overlooked but incredibly valuable: arranging a comfortable space for resting, removing trip hazards, and ensuring frequently used items are within reach all support safe early mobility.

By taking an active role in your preparation, you give yourself the best possible foundation for a smooth surgery and a strong recovery.
