Not every case of knee pain requires surgery — and in fact, many people see excellent improvements with non-surgical treatments when guided correctly. Understanding these options can help you manage symptoms effectively and delay or even avoid surgery.

The foundation of knee pain management is strengthening the muscles around the joint. Strong quadriceps and hamstrings help stabilise the knee, reducing strain and improving alignment. Physiotherapy programmes tailored to your specific symptoms make an enormous difference.

Weight management also plays a crucial role. Even modest weight loss can significantly reduce knee pressure, especially in cases of arthritis. Complementing this with low-impact exercise — such as cycling, swimming or brisk walking — supports overall joint health.

Medication may help during flare-ups, and anti-inflammatory tablets or topical gels can ease discomfort. Steroid injections can offer temporary relief, while newer treatments like hyaluronic acid or biologic injections may be beneficial for certain patients.

Activity modification is often overlooked but highly effective. Avoiding repetitive twisting, prolonged kneeling or heavy lifting can help protect the knee.

Managing knee pain is about balance — staying active, strengthening strategically and being mindful of your body. With the right approach, many people can stay comfortable and mobile for years without needing surgery.
